oh dear.. we used to drive alot from home to work but since got laid off so we are stuck at home with little money and then not enough money to buy some gas this has been real challenging for us and we dont like this to happen for anyone but it happened to us.... One thing tho i just learned if you barely drive out and you will get alot slash down cost from the car insurance... It really helped us some... I had to contact my car insurance to inform them that we dont go out alot and we only go out for food store thats it once a week that is about 5 miles per week... then they say they will cut way down for the car insurance.. that was nice... I am trying to reach 2000 points and hopefully to get a gas card worth of 250 dollars.. that will help us big time... so far now just 1,110 point... i guess i will just keep on going posting message... I hope this is not a scam... I am being hopeful...

Around 250Km's per week, commuting to and from work.
A bit more if I have to do grocery runs, etc.

I've been lucky. My '89 325i is quite frugal on fuel, and I fill the tank every 11 or so days.

We shall see what the newer '94 530i is going to be like.

Being retired, we drive twice a week to visit my wife's brother and then to buy groceries and other necessities. So far this year, my car has been driven 3,000 miles, or about 100 miles per week. The gas is the largest part of operating my car. I change my own oil and filters, and I perform my own brake service. Always have, always will – at least, until I reach the age of my uncle, 97. ;-)

To CruiserPA: To suggest that it would be cheaper to take some other form of transportation is so ridiculous as to be inane. My car is paid for, it costs me little in upkeep, and anything else is in the future. Gas stations are on the way to the grocery store and / or AT the grocery store.

My daughter, who lives at home, has driven about 10,000 miles so far this year. Most of that is to / from her job.
My wife, still working part-time, has probably driven fewer miles in her car that I have in my car. Her job is about 5 miles from home.

I live in Mountain Home, ID and drive to Boise M - Th. It is 40 miles from my drive way to work parking lot one way, so I drive 320 miles a week and fill up at least 1 once a week, or Monday then again on Thursday afternoon.

I think for those that drive so little they do not even need a car. If they traveled by train or bus or taxi it may be cheaper. The cost to own and maintain and insure a car just one year may be costing them more than they think. Find another way to travel or pay someone to take you. For you to be on this site to save a few cents is probably costing you more just to drive to this lower cost supplier. I have a friend that drives to a station on the other side of town to save two or three cents a gallon, it is a 17 mile round trip. That does not make much sense to me.

Up until last year, the trend was towards more miles traveled annually. However, we have been reversing course - likely as a direct result of the recession. Guess it's tough to travel to/from a job every day if you don't have one to go to.

Hmmm. As of now, 60% of those voting say they drive 200 miles or less a week. That would translate to 10,000 miles or less a year. I've always heard that the actual average was somewhere in the neighborhood of 15,000 miles a year.

Interesting that 60% of the people are driving 200 miles a week or less, well within the range of an EV, but I wonder how many of them would actually consider buying one for their routine driving.
